Sustainably Minded & Ethical Practices

All Dyspnea garments are made with love 💖in Bali, Indonesia - co-founder, Jameen's island home of the past few years. We work closely with a small team of Balinese women who specialise in hand-beading, a tradition which has been passed down from generation to generation 🙏

We are dedicated to fostering a safe, comfortable and fulfilling workplace for our ladies whom we consider a part of the Dyspnea 👩‍👩‍👧‍👧family. Working alongside women who are independent and empowered through running their own business has a contagious effect on us. Every day we feel honoured to create magic 💫 with them, and we believe that this harmony is reflected in the high-quality craftsmanship of every Dyspnea piece. 

We acknowledge that the road to sustainability 🌱 is long but we are thrilled to share with you some of the ways in which we have begun that journey:

• All Dyspnea garments are now shipped using compostable exterior packaging and reusable interior packaging 💝
• To minimise fabric wastage we have a made-to-order method which means we do not produce large quantities of stock 🌏
• All of our samples are sold through our monthly Instagram sales so that every Dyspnea garment finds its perfect home and no dead stock is held unnecessarily 💌
• We also encourage the reselling of our items through avenues like Depop, so that every Dyspnea piece can be loved again and again 👗

 

Where it began 

 

Once upon a time Rachel and I made everything ourselves! We drew designs and worked with the fabrics, sampling new techniques to get it just how we have it to this day. The result was beading we're now renowned for - maximum sparkle ✨ on the sheerest of fabric.

As our business gathered up more and more Dyspets loving our stuff, it wasn't feasible to continue with our DIY making so we started compiling an A team of people to help us realise our design dreams.  

Being Perth girls, we went to Bali, Indonesia to find artisan makers. 🌱 Since then, Jameen has had the joy of overseeing all of our production and ensuring everything is running smoothly - the clothes and our team! 

We’re proud to say our team leaders are all women ⚢ Going out to dinner with these girls starts with a prayer and ends in an all out, woman rock chant! 🔥 It's an amazing feeling knowing we are all on the same page and like we have an extended family inside our business.

Running the show is absolute 👸🏾 Kadek - we've worked with her for over three years now. She manages her own business handling all things manafcturing, sampling and production. Kadek is originally from Singaraja and moved her family to Denpasar to start her business. She now employs family and friends from back home to work for her.

We work closely with Kadek on a daily basis to get the piece you receive in the mailbox. She recently surprised us and painted one of her rooms baby pink with a Dyspnea motif on the wall. We had no idea she was going to do this! BLESS 🕊

 

 

Kheke is our little magic maker 💫 She oversees all production and sampling and makes sure everything runs smoothly. She's become very close to Kadek as her family is in Java. Kheke moved to Bali looking for a job and fate and good karma sent her our way! Turns out she's awesome at what she does and we now have her on board part-time (we'd have her more than that if she could, but she has another job she loves, too).

Komang is one incredibly talented woman, we fondly call her magic hands 🌟 She's only recently come on board this year and honestly, there is nothing this woman can’t do! She is the only one who can do the Songbird beading technique. 

She works between Denpasar and also in her village, Julah, where the beaders are. Komang will makes a sample piece, then teaches the other women in her team how to make it themselves 💅🏽
